           PREPAREDNESS, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AS AMENDED,
           MAY 7, 2002

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," authorizing boards of school
     6     directors to establish a program to provide high school
     7     diplomas to certain veterans.

     8     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  hereby enacts as follows:
    10     Section 1.  Section 1611 of the act of March 10, 1949
    11  (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is
    12  amended by adding a subsection to read:


     1     Section 1611.  Academic Degrees.--* * *
     2     (c)  A board of school directors may establish a program to
     3  be known as "Operation Recognition" which provides for granting
     4  a high school diploma to any honorably discharged veteran who
     5  served in the United States military in the Korean War between
     6  the twenty-seventh day of June, one thousand nine hundred fifty,
     7  and the thirty-first day of January, one thousand nine hundred
     8  fifty-five, who attended high school between one thousand nine
     9  hundred forty-seven and one thousand nine hundred fifty-five and
    10  who would have been a member of a graduation class during the
    11  years one thousand nine hundred fifty-one through one thousand
    12  nine hundred fifty-nine FIFTY-SEVEN but did not graduate from     <--
    13  high school due to entry into military service. A board of
    14  school directors may award a diploma posthumously to an eligible
    15  veteran. An application for a diploma under this subsection must
    16  be made in the manner prescribed by the board of school
    17  directors.
    18     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
