        INTRODUCED BY HOLL, SCHWARTZ, STAPLETON, TOMLINSON, WAGNER,
           SALVATORE, COSTA, KUKOVICH, GERLACH, LOEPER, WOZNIAK, O'PAKE,
           EARLL, WAUGH, BELL, BRIGHTBILL, ROBBINS, MUSTO, MOWERY,
           MELLOW, THOMPSON, GREENLEAF, WHITE, WENGER, HART, BODACK,
           LEMMOND, PUNT, BELAN, DENT, BOSCOLA, KITCHEN, KASUNIC,
           RHOADES, TILGHMAN AND STOUT, MARCH 8, 2000

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MARCH 8, 2000

                            A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring March 10 through 19, 2000, as "Pennsylvania Heritage
     2     Week" and March 12, 2000, as "Charter Day" in Pennsylvania to
     3     commemorate the land grant of King Charles II to William Penn
     4     in 1681, establishing this Commonwealth.

     5     WHEREAS, The presentation of the royal land grant charter
     6  given by King Charles II of England to William Penn, the founder
     7  of Pennsylvania, took place in March of 1681; and
     8     WHEREAS, This original charter established land that would
     9  eventually become the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and gave Penn
    10  the right to establish government, enact laws and create
    11  policies to create his "Holy Experiment"; and
    12     WHEREAS, The charter, a highly embellished and rare document,
    13  was the personal copy of William Penn given by his heirs to the
    14  Commonwealth in 1812; and
    15     WHEREAS, The charter has recently been cleaned and repaired
    16  to be exhibited for the duration of "Pennsylvania Heritage
    17  Week," March 10 through 19; and

     1     WHEREAS, All citizens are invited to view the charter at The
     2  State Museum in Harrisburg during "Pennsylvania Heritage Week"
     3  and to view the Great Law of 1682, exhibited for the first time
     4  in 50 years, and the legislative act establishing York County;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, A majority of the historic sites operated by the
     7  Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will be open and
     8  free to the public on March 12; and
     9     WHEREAS, A special symposium titled "William Penn's Legacies
    10  for Local Governments" will be held at The State Museum, free to
    11  the public, on March 13; and
    12     WHEREAS, The third annual Penn Ambassador Program, with
    13  participants nominated by the General Assembly, will be held
    14  March 12 and 13; and
    15     WHEREAS, Other programs will be held during Pennsylvania
    16  Heritage Week to celebrate the diversity of the heritage of this
    17  Commonwealth; therefore be it
    18     RESOLVED (the House of Representatives concurring), That the
    19  General Assembly declare March 10 through 19, 2000, as
    20  "Pennsylvania Heritage Week" and March 12, 2000, as "Charter
    21  Day" in Pennsylvania.
