A RESOLUTION 1 Designating October 1999 as "Big Brothers Big Sisters Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Big Brothers was founded by Ernest Coulter more than 4 90 years ago for volunteers to mentor young, neglected boys; and 5 WHEREAS, Big Brothers joined with Big Sisters in 1977, 6 officially creating today's Big Brothers Big Sisters 7 organization; and 8 WHEREAS, There are 510 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies 9 across the United States that offer mentoring relationships to 10 over 105,000 young people; and 11 WHEREAS, There are 32 affiliated and independent Big Brothers 12 Big Sisters programs in Pennsylvania that served over 8,400 13 children and matched 4,723 children in mentoring relationships 14 in 1998; and 15 WHEREAS, Young children involved with Big Brothers Big 16 Sisters programs are less involved in drugs and alcohol, perform
1 better in school and develop better relationships with parents, 2 siblings and peers; and 3 WHEREAS, Thousands of Pennsylvanians give generously of their 4 time as Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers by providing 5 patience, understanding and friendship to young children in 6 need; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate October 1999 as "Big 8 Brothers Big Sisters Month" in Pennsylvania.
