A RESOLUTION
1 Designating December 5, 2000, as "United Nations International
2 Year of the Volunteer Day" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, On November 20, 1997, the United Nations General
4 Assembly adopted a resolution to proclaim 2001 as the
5 International Year of Volunteers; and
6 WHEREAS, The resolution includes an appeal to Member States
7 of the United Nations, as well as other participants in the
8 observance of the designation for the year, to highlight 2001 as
9 a special occasion benefiting the peoples of the world in their
10 quest for a better life for all, based on the voluntary
11 commitment of individuals and groups to make their time
12 available and to share their resources and skills in the
13 interest of those less advantaged; and
14 WHEREAS, The resolution is intended to encourage more people
15 globally to engage in volunteer activity; and
16 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the citizens of
17 Pennsylvania who serve as volunteers in various activities and
1 to encourage the entire citizenry of this Commonwealth to become
2 volunteers during 2001; therefore be it
3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
4 December 5, 2000, as "United Nations International Year of the
5 Volunteer Day" in Pennsylvania.
