        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 5, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing October 11, 2000, as "SAVE Today for Tomorrow Day"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Violence is among the leading causes of death in
     4  America and has replaced disease as the number one killer of
     5  children; and
     6     WHEREAS, Domestic violence has devastating effects on a
     7  woman's physical and emotional well-being and her ability to
     8  care for her children; and
     9     WHEREAS, Violence comes in many forms: sexual violence, youth
    10  gang and peer-related violence, family violence, street violence
    11  and media violence; and
    12     WHEREAS, Billions of dollars per year are lost to preventable


     1  violence-related deaths and injuries, which tremendously burden
     2  America's health care systems; and
     3     WHEREAS, The first step toward unraveling the many layers of
     4  our nation's violence problems is awareness; and
     5     WHEREAS, Awareness and prevention are the heart of the SAVE
     6  (Stop America's Violence Everywhere) Program and its cornerstone
     7  event, "SAVE Today for Tomorrow Day," during which physicians'
     8  spouses across the country will join efforts to stop America's
     9  violence everywhere; and
    10     WHEREAS, Members of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance
    11  are leading the effort to urge local citizens to search for ways
    12  to end violence in our communities; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in support of
    14  the need to educate people and help victims of violence,
    15  recognize October 11, 2000, as "SAVE Today for Tomorrow Day" in
    16  Pennsylvania.
