        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 25, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing September 23, 2000, as "National Hunting and Fishing
     2     Day."

     3     WHEREAS, September 23 marks the 29th anniversary of the first
     4  "National Hunting and Fishing Day"; and
     5     WHEREAS, The idea of devoting a special day to honor
     6  sportspersons who hunt and fish for their leading role in the
     7  conservation of fish, wildlife and other natural resources
     8  originated with a Pennsylvanian, Ira Joffe of Upper Darby; and
     9     WHEREAS, In 1972 the late President Richard M. Nixon
    10  proclaimed the first "National Hunting and Fishing Day"; and
    11     WHEREAS, The fourth Saturday of September is a day when
    12  sportsmen's clubs across the country open their grounds and

     1  conduct a host of events where people can learn about the
     2  outdoors, the role hunters and fishermen have played in
     3  providing a clean environment and the places where all sorts of
     4  outdoor pursuits may be enjoyed; and
     5     WHEREAS, More people than ever are growing up without the
     6  slightest notion of what hunting and fishing are all about or
     7  the knowledge that sportspersons have worked the hardest and
     8  paid the most to protect and enhance the natural resources so
     9  freely enjoyed by many others; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
    11  September 23, 2000, as "National Hunting and Fishing Day"; and
    12  be it further
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
    14  Pennsylvanians to participate in the activities associated with
    15  "National Hunting and Fishing Day."
