INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 28, 2000
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Declaring March 10 through 19, 2000, as "Heritage Week" and 2 March 12, 2000, as "Charter Day" in Pennsylvania to 3 commemorate the land grant of King Charles II to William Penn 4 in 1681, establishing this Commonwealth. 5 WHEREAS, The presentation of the royal land grant charter 6 given by King Charles II of England to William Penn, the founder 7 of Pennsylvania, took place in March of 1681; and 8 WHEREAS, This original charter established land that would 9 eventually become the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and gave Penn 10 the right to establish government, enact laws and create 11 policies to create his "Holy Experiment"; and 12 WHEREAS, The charter, a highly embellished and rare document, 13 was the personal copy of William Penn given by his heirs to the
1 Commonwealth in 1812; and 2 WHEREAS, The charter has recently been cleaned and repaired 3 to be exhibited for the duration of "Heritage Week," March 10 4 through 19; and 5 WHEREAS, All citizens are invited to view the charter at The 6 State Museum in Harrisburg during "Heritage Week" and to view 7 the Great Law of 1682, exhibited for the first time in 50 years, 8 and the legislative act establishing York County; and 9 WHEREAS, A majority of the historic sites operated by the 10 Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will be open and 11 free to the public on March 12; and 12 WHEREAS, A special symposium titled "William Penn's Legacies 13 for Local Governments" will be held at The State Museum, free to 14 the public, on March 13; and 15 WHEREAS, The third annual Penn Ambassador Program, with 16 participants nominated by the General Assembly, will be held 17 March 12 and 13; and 18 WHEREAS, Other programs will be held during Heritage Week to 19 celebrate the diversity of the heritage of this Commonwealth; 20 therefore be it 21 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 22 declare March 10 through 19, 2000, as "Heritage Week" and March 23 12, 2000, as "Charter Day" in Pennsylvania.
