A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of November 1999 as "Epilepsy Awareness
2 Month" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Since 1969, November has annually been proclaimed
4 "National Epilepsy Awareness Month" by the President of the
5 United States; and
6 WHEREAS, Governor Ridge has proclaimed November 1999 as
7 "Epilepsy Awareness Month" in this Commonwealth; and
8 WHEREAS, For many of the 2.5 million Americans with epilepsy,
9 the biggest problem is not the disorder itself, but society's
10 attitudes toward those with the condition; and
1 WHEREAS, The purpose of "Epilepsy Awareness Month" is to
2 dispel common myths about the disorder, promote public awareness
3 and understanding of the condition, inform people with seizure
4 disorders and their families about programs and informational
5 resources available nationally and in their local areas and
6 educate the public about symptoms so that undiagnosed cases can
7 be found and treated early; and
8 WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a neurological disorder which affects
9 more than one million women in America, creating special risks
10 for pregnant women who have the condition; increasing the risk
11 of depression, suicide and unexplained and sudden death;
12 exposing women to prolonged and life-threatening seizures; and
13 having severe economic and social consequences; and
14 WHEREAS, This year begins the second year of the Epilepsy
15 Foundation's Campaign for Women's Health, focusing on women with
16 epilepsy, and throughout November the Epilepsy Foundation's
17 offices in Pennsylvania are sponsoring educational events as
18 part of its campaign for public awareness; therefore be it
19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
20 November 1999 as "Epilepsy Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
