        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 4, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 8, 1999, as "Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania;
     2     and commending the National Association of Letter Carriers.

     3     WHEREAS, On May 8, 1999, the National Association of Letter
     4  Carriers in cooperation with the United States Postal Service
     5  and the United Way will conduct its sixth nationwide food drive;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, The food drive, the largest in the country, last
     8  year resulted in the collection of 45 million pounds of food
     9  nationwide; and
    10     WHEREAS, Postal patrons will be asked to place nonperishable
    11  food items in proximity to their mailboxes for collection by
    12  their letter carriers; and


     1     WHEREAS, Food pantries, food kitchens and homeless shelters
     2  will be the beneficiaries of this massive food collection
     3  effort; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 8,
     5  1999, as "Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
     6     RESOLVED, That the members of the National Association of
     7  Letter Carriers be commended for their humanitarian efforts to
     8  alleviate hunger; and be it further
     9     RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth be
    10  encouraged to contribute generously to the letter carriers' food
    11  drive.
