        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 20, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring WBA Super Welterweight Champion and former Olympic Gold
     2     Medalist David Reid for his many accomplishments in the ring.

     3     WHEREAS, David Reid was the only American to win a gold medal
     4  in boxing in the 1996 Olympics; and
     5     WHEREAS, Mr. Reid's fists only got him into trouble in the
     6  tough North Philadelphia neighborhood where he was raised by his
     7  mother, Marie, until he met up with coach Al Mitchell, who
     8  trains and advises him to this day; and
     9     WHEREAS, Mr. Reid won a convincing unanimous decision over
    10  previously unbeaten James Coker in 1998 running his record to a
    11  perfect 11-0 and earning him the WBC Continental Americas title;
    12  and
    13     WHEREAS, Mr. Reid won the WBA Super Welterweight crown via a


     1  12-round decision over France's Laurent Boudouani in 1999;
     2  therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor David Reid
     4  for his many accomplishments in the ring and wish him continued
     5  success in his boxing career.
