        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 13, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring June 1999 as "Leukemia Awareness Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania and urging all citizens of this Commonwealth to
     3     join in its observance.

     4     WHEREAS, This year more than 145,000 Americans will be
     5  stricken with leukemia or one of its related diseases of
     6  lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma; and
     7     WHEREAS, Four in every 100,000 children in the United States
     8  between two and ten years of age will be diagnosed with leukemia
     9  this year; and
    10     WHEREAS, More children die from leukemia than from any other

     1  disease; and
     2     WHEREAS, Leukemia strikes ten times as many adults as
     3  children and is the leading fatal malignant disease in men and
     4  women under 35 years of age; and
     5     WHEREAS, The overall survival rate of leukemia has doubled in
     6  the past 20 years, and the effectiveness of recently developed
     7  treatment methods and steady advances in research bring us
     8  closer to finding the probable causes and cures for leukemia and
     9  related cancers; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America, a voluntary health
    11  organization, depends solely on the voluntary contributions of
    12  time and money by concerned businesses, groups and individuals;
    13  and
    14     WHEREAS, A primary goal of the Leukemia Society of America is
    15  to promote increased state and Federal funding of biomedical
    16  research: and
    17     WHEREAS, Finding the causes and eventual cures for leukemia,
    18  lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma relies on
    19  continued funding and research; and
    20     WHEREAS, Past biomedical research is responsible for the most
    21  common form of childhood leukemia being considered as a
    22  potentially curable disease; and
    23     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America, together with
    24  regional and local chapters, is dedicated to improving the
    25  quality of life of patients and their families; and
    26     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America provides annual
    27  financial assistance to more than 6,000 patients with leukemia
    28  and related cancers for expenditures not met by other sources;
    29  and
    30     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America is undertaking a

     1  nationwide campaign to find a cure by the year 2000; therefore
     2  be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the month
     4  of June 1999 as "Leukemia Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
