        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 1, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of March 7 through 13, 1999, as "Space,
     2     Satellite and Technology Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, A large percentage of the student population of our
     4  country is deficient in math, science and technology learning
     5  opportunities; and
     6     WHEREAS, The discoveries and knowledge gained from space
     7  exploration and satellite technology development are valuable
     8  educational tools not adequately utilized in the classrooms; and
     9     WHEREAS, The increasing application of space technology to
    10  everyday life and industry requires an adequate work force; and
    11     WHEREAS, Students are more receptive to learning that
    12  incorporates hands-on activities and real-life situations; and

     1     WHEREAS, Exemplary programs such as Unionville High School's
     2  Earth and Space Science Program and West Chester University's
     3  Educational Center for Earth Observation Systems need to be
     4  replicated across this Commonwealth; and
     5     WHEREAS, The following are examples of program in this
     6  Commonwealth that are being developed to better educate
     7  students, teachers and parents:
     8         (1)  West Chester University offers a special SOAR
     9     teacher-training workshop on satellite tracking, image
    10     processing and remote sensing from March 10 through 12, 1999.
    11         (2)  West Chester University hosts the national
    12     Satellites and Education Conference XII from March 10 through
    13     12, 1999.
    14         (3)  The Satellite Educators Association holds its annual
    15     meeting on March 11, 1999.
    16         (4)  Pennsylvania teachers involved with Global Learning
    17     and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) are
    18     meeting and discussing the work their students are doing with
    19     scientists at the fourth annual GLOBE breakfast.
    20         (5)  NASA has interactive telecommunications on March 10
    21     and 11, 1999.
    22         (6)  There is a live satellite broadcast from the
    23     Peruvian rain forest on March 11, 1999; therefore be it
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    25  week of March 7 through 13, 1999, as "Space, Satellite and
    26  Technology Week" in Pennsylvania in recognition of many
    27  educational activities planned in this Commonwealth to celebrate
    28  our commitments to space exploration and excellence in
    29  education.
