THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA

HOUSE BILL

No. 2712 Session of 2000

INTRODUCED BY HANNA, SEPTEMBER 11, 2000

REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, SEPTEMBER 11, 2000

                                     AN ACT

1 Designating a bridge in the borough of Renovo, Clinton County,
     2 the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge.

3 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4 hereby enacts as follows:
5 Section 1. Finding of fact.
6 The General Assembly finds and declares as follows:
7 (1) In 1970, HRI Incorporated built a steel, multigirder
8 bridge, 192 feet in length, over a section of what was then
     9 the Pennsylvania Railroad.
10 (2) The bridge referred to in paragraph (1) can stand
11 today as a symbol of the great Pennsylvania Railroad, which
12 was the first great business enterprise in America.
13 (3) The Pennsylvania Railroad, called "the standard
14 railroad of the world," was chartered on April 13, 1846. By
15 1854 it was a continuous rail route from Philadelphia to
16 Pittsburgh; and, at its pinnacle the Pennsylvania Railroad
17 service territory extended from Manhattan to St. Louis.

1 (4) The Pennsylvania Railroad connected our two largest
2 cities, while bringing commerce and jobs to wide ranging
3 parts of this Commonwealth. The hard-working employees of the
4 railroad who contributed so much of their blood, sweat and
5 tears to this Commonwealth deserve appropriate recognition.
6 Section 2. The Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge.
7 (a) Designation authorized.--The bridge designated by the
8 Department of Transportation as Bridge No. 18012004201253, which
9 passes over a section of the Norfolk Southern Railroad in the
10 borough of Renovo, Clinton County, is designated and shall be
11 known as the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge.
12 (b) Signs.--Appropriate signs shall be posted and maintained
13 by the Department of Transportation.
    14 Section 3. Effective date.
15 This act shall take effect immediately.
