SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 11 Session of 1997


        INTRODUCED BY SALVATORE, MOWERY, LOEPER, GERLACH, BODACK,
           JUBELIRER, O'PAKE, MUSTO, TARTAGLIONE, HELFRICK, PICCOLA,
           BELL, ARMSTRONG, BRIGHTBILL, THOMPSON, STOUT, ULIANA, EARLL,
           AFFLERBACH, ROBBINS, MADIGAN, WENGER, MURPHY, STAPLETON,
           SCHWARTZ AND HART, JANUARY 27, 1997

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JANUARY 27, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of January 26 through February 1, 1997, as
     2     "Catholic Schools Week" in this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Catholic schools in this Commonwealth are
     4  celebrating "Catholic Schools Week" from January 26 through
     5  February 1, 1997; and
     6     WHEREAS, Catholic elementary and secondary schools, educating
     7  approximately 240,000 students annually, save State and local
     8  taxpayers more than 1.3 billion dollars each year; and
     9     WHEREAS, Catholic schools instill in young people a strong
    10  foundation of values, self-esteem, self-confidence and
    11  leadership skills; and
    12     WHEREAS, Catholic schools, in providing young people with
    13  solid values and academic skills needed in becoming responsible
    14  citizens of this Commonwealth and nation, have a dropout rate of
    15  less than 3% and a postgraduate higher education enrollment rate
    16  of 80%; therefore be it


     1     RESOLVED, That the Senate declare the week of January 26
     2  through February 1, 1997, as "Catholic Schools Week" in this
     3  Commonwealth and express congratulations and appreciation to
     4  Catholic elementary and secondary schools across this
     5  Commonwealth on the occasion of "Catholic Schools Week" in 1997.
