AN ACT
1 Amending Title 42 (Judiciary and Judicial Procedure) of the
2 Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, further providing for the
3 number of judges of the courts of common pleas in certain
4 judicial districts.
5 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6 hereby enacts as follows:
7 Section 1. Section 911(a) of Title 42 of the Pennsylvania
8 Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
9 § 911. Courts of common pleas.
10 (a) General rule.--There shall be one court of common pleas
11 for each judicial district of this Commonwealth consisting of
12 the following number of judges:

30 Section 2. (a) The provisions of 42 Pa.C.S. § 3135 shall

1 not be applicable to the selection of judges for the judgeships
2 created in the amendment of 42 Pa.C.S. § 911(a).
3 (b) Except as provided in subsections (c), (d) and (e) AND <--
4 (D), the new judgeships added by the amendment of 42 Pa.C.S. §
5 911(a) shall be created on January 5, 1998, and shall be
6 initially filled by election at the 1997 municipal election.
7 (c) The new judgeships for the ELEVENTH, twelfth, twenty- <--
8 third, FORTY-THIRD and fifty-seventh districts added by the <--
9 amendment of 42 Pa.C.S. § 911(a) shall be created on January 3,
10 2000, and shall be initially filled by election at the 1999
11 municipal election.
12 (d) The new judgeships for the second and fifteenth
13 districts added by the amendment of 42 Pa.C.S. § 911(a) shall be
14 created as follows: one judgeship in each district shall be
15 created on January 5, 1998, and shall be initially filled by
16 election at the 1997 municipal election and one judgeship in
17 each district shall be created on January 3, 2000, and shall be
18 initially filled by election at the 1999 municipal election.
19 (e) The new judgeships for the thirty-eighth district added <--
20 by the amendment of 42 Pa.C.S. § 911(a) shall be created as
21 follows: two judgeships shall be created on January 5, 1998, and
22 shall be initially filled by election at the 1997 municipal
23 election and two judgeships shall be created on January 3, 2000,
24 and shall be initially filled by election at the 1999 municipal
25 election.
26 Section 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
