A RESOLUTION
1 Congratulating the Penn State women's basketball team on winning
2 the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
3 WHEREAS, The Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT)
4 was recently conducted at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas; and
5 WHEREAS, On March 24, 1998, playing before 10,057 strongly
6 partisan fans, the Lady Lions overcame the partisan crowd to
7 defeat Baylor 59-56 and win the WNIT championship; and
8 WHEREAS, The win marked Penn State coach Rene Portland's
9 501st career victory; and
10 WHEREAS, Lady Lions center Andrea Garner was named the WNIT
11 most valuable player; and
12 WHEREAS, Notable is the fact that Baylor, prior to the
13 contest with the Lady Lions, had been beaten only once in the
14 Ferrell Center; and
15 WHEREAS, Winning the WNIT focused national attention on Penn
16 State's women's basketball program; therefore be it
17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend hearty
1 congratulations to the Penn State women's basketball team and
2 coach Rene Portland on winning the Women's National Invitational
3 Tournament.
