A RESOLUTION 1 Congratulating K. Leroy Irvis on being chosen as the first 2 recipient of the Pennsylvania Founder's Award and recognizing 3 his achievements and his contributions to this Commonwealth. 4 WHEREAS, K. Leroy Irvis has been honored as the first 5 recipient of the Pennsylvania Founder's Award presented by the 6 Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; and 7 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Founder's Award is given annually 8 to recognize a distinguished citizen of this Commonwealth who
1 has demonstrated a deep understanding of the ideals of William 2 Penn, the founder of this Commonwealth, and has shown the 3 creative ability to put into practice these ideals; and 4 WHEREAS, K. Leroy Irvis is worthy of recognition for his 5 lifelong body of work as a leader, public servant, social 6 philosopher, educator, orator, artist and poet; and 7 WHEREAS, In 1977, K. Leroy Irvis was elected Speaker of the 8 Pennsylvania House of Representatives, becoming the first 9 African-American speaker in the United States; and 10 WHEREAS, Our Commonwealth is considerably enriched as a 11 result of the service of K. Leroy Irvis, who personifies the 12 qualities that we most revere in a public servant: honor, 13 statesmanship and compassion; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate K. 15 Leroy Irvis on being chosen as the first recipient of the 16 Pennsylvania Founder's Award; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives concur with the 18 Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's belief that this 19 special man is worthy of this important and prestigious award.
