        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 17, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating September 26, 1998, as "Austrian-American Day" in
     2     this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, The lives of Pennsylvanians have been diversified
     4  and enriched by many immigrants who have come from around the
     5  world for over 200 years seeking new lives for themselves and
     6  their families; and
     7     WHEREAS, A fair number of these immigrants arrived here from
     8  Austria; and
     9     WHEREAS, In their expansion from Colony of Georgia in 1734,
    10  many Austrian immigrants chose Pennsylvania as the place to
    11  settle and raise their families; and
    12     WHEREAS, Austrian-Americans have brought to this Commonwealth


     1  and this country their love of freedom, a deep respect for
     2  education and a strong work ethic; and
     3     WHEREAS, Austrian-Americans have demonstrated wide-ranging
     4  and educating influence: Supreme Court Justices Louis Brandeis
     5  and Felix Frankfurter upheld laws and established constitutional
     6  precedent in 46 years of combined service on the United States
     7  Supreme Court, composer Frederick Loewe helped transform
     8  American musical theater and Arnold Schwarzenegger has
     9  entertained Americans for years; and
    10     WHEREAS, Austrian-American Pennsylvanians have made their own
    11  contributions to and lasting imprints on our nation and this
    12  Commonwealth; and
    13     WHEREAS, "Austrian-American Day" proudly recognizes and pays
    14  tribute to the large number of Austrian-Americans living in this
    15  Commonwealth; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
    17  September 26, 1998, as "Austrian-American Day" in this
    18  Commonwealth.
