        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 12, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of April 13, 1998, as "Pennsylvania Academic
     2     Competition Week"; and urging the Department of Education,
     3     local school districts and intermediate units to participate
     4     in the sixth annual Statewide Pennsylvania Academic
     5     Competition on April 17, 1998.

     6     WHEREAS, The education of all Pennsylvania children is a
     7  major concern to the citizens of this Commonwealth and requires
     8  the use of creative and innovative means to focus attention upon
     9  this concern; and
    10     WHEREAS, Academic competition is an innovative and creative
    11  attempt to involve children, parents, educators and community
    12  members in an educational forum for excellence; and
    13     WHEREAS, Athletic excellence has long been recognized by

     1  societal and community rewards provided for that type of
     2  competition; and
     3     WHEREAS, Academic competition helps to hone the abilities and
     4  intellectual skills of students, as well as providing
     5  opportunities for incentives to continue the pursuit of
     6  excellence in education; and
     7     WHEREAS, A coordinated program of academic competition has
     8  not existed in this Commonwealth, except in isolated school
     9  district programs; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week
    11  of April 13, 1998, as "Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week";
    12  and be it further
    13     RESOLVED, That the Department of Education, local school
    14  districts and intermediate units are urged to actively
    15  participate in the finals of the sixth annual Statewide
    16  Pennsylvania Academic Competition to be held in the House of
    17  Representatives Chamber on April 17, 1998.
