INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 25, 1997
A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring November 15, 1997, as "Aboriginal Languages Day" and 2 the month of November 1997 as "Native American Month" in 3 Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, Native nations within the boundaries of this 5 Commonwealth are enjoying a rebirth of traditional aboriginal 6 languages; and 7 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's native nations are desirous of 8 promoting an appreciation of aboriginal languages inherent to 9 Pennsylvania's history; and 10 WHEREAS, The Tioga Paths Community of Native Americans ask 11 that the Governor, along with the Senate and House of 12 Representatives, set aside November 15 as "Aboriginal Languages 13 Day" and the entire month of November as "Native American Month" 14 throughout this Commonwealth; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 16 November 15, 1997, as "Aboriginal Languages Day" and the month
1 of November 1997 as "Native American Month" in Pennsylvania; and 2 be it further 3 RESOLVED, That all native nations represented within this 4 Commonwealth set aside for celebration November 15, 1997, as 5 "Aboriginal Languages Day" and the entire month of November 1997 6 as "Native American Month"; and be it further 7 RESOLVED, That all Aboriginal people throughout this 8 Commonwealth be encouraged to commit themselves to learning at 9 least one word a day in their aboriginal language; and be it 10 further 11 RESOLVED, That all schools within this Commonwealth, 12 including postsecondary institutions, be encouraged to establish 13 activities designed to transmit accurately the history of 14 Aboriginal peoples and their languages in scholastic 15 environments through student posters, student literature, 16 identification signs and other audiovisuals and the adoption of 17 greetings in aboriginal languages; and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That Aboriginal people be encouraged to write or 19 telephone non-Aboriginal groups, including women's groups, 20 universities and colleges, human rights associations, other 21 levels of government, community groups and artistic groups, to 22 seek support in the fields of language and education and to make 23 themselves available to these groups for education; and be it 24 further 25 RESOLVED, That Aboriginal nations within this Commonwealth 26 and their elders be encouraged to sponsor social gatherings 27 within their communities to bring together elders, youth and 28 parents to promote awareness of aboriginal languages and 29 cultures.
