        INTRODUCED BY WASHINGTON, JAMES, ROEBUCK, MYERS, JOSEPHS,
           KIRKLAND, PRESTON, YOUNGBLOOD, HORSEY, THOMAS, ROBINSON,
           CARN, MANDERINO, A. H. WILLIAMS, OLIVER, LEDERER, EVANS,
           BUXTON, ORIE, C. WILLIAMS, RAMOS, M. COHEN, LAUGHLIN, BISHOP,
           DeWEESE, VEON AND LESCOVITZ, OCTOBER 28, 1997

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 28, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the historic Million Woman March in Philadelphia
     2     and honoring the organizers of the event as well as all of
     3     its participants.

     4     WHEREAS, More than 1.5 million African-American women
     5  gathered in Philadelphia on Saturday, October 25, 1997, to:
     6         (1)  Peacefully join in a show of unity and cohesion.
     7         (2)  Affirm a commitment to strengthening the role of
     8     African-American women as important members of society.
     9         (3)  Bond, share common experiences and begin to help one
    10     another address the issues of crime, drugs, education and
    11     employment in their communities.
    12         (4)  Celebrate the importance of the family and the
    13     strong values that families instill on their members;
    14  and
    15     WHEREAS, The organization of the Million Woman March was
    16  largely a grass-roots effort spearheaded by a few determined


     1  African-American women from Pennsylvania; and
     2     WHEREAS, In spite of overwhelming odds against the success of
     3  organizing such a massive endeavor, the Million Woman March was
     4  a resounding success; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Million Woman March received widespread acclaim
     6  and national attention focusing on the city of Philadelphia, the
     7  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and African-American women as a
     8  whole; and
     9     WHEREAS, Society as a whole benefits when women from all
    10  across the world unite to show unity, understanding and
    11  fellowship; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the spirit
    13  of the Million Woman March; and be it further
    14     RESOLVED, That the organizers of the Million Woman March be
    15  commended for a job well done and for showing the world that
    16  when Pennsylvanian women put their minds to it, there is nothing
    17  that they cannot accomplish.
