        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 7, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the Governor to proclaim the festival held
     2     annually during the first weekend in October in Canton,
     3     Pennsylvania, as the "Pennsylvania State Apple 'n Cheese
     4     Festival."

     5     WHEREAS, The Borough of Canton, located in the Endless
     6  Mountains of Bradford County, has hosted the Canton Apple 'n
     7  Cheese Festival for the past nine years during the first weekend
     8  in October; and
     9     WHEREAS, The festival attracted over 25,000 people last year,
    10  and in 1996, visitors were treated to the largest festival yet
    11  with over 140 quality craftsmen and vendors; and
    12     WHEREAS, Cheese-making, basket-making, carving, apple butter-
    13  making, blacksmithing, quilting, sausage-making and broom-making
    14  demonstrations are offered during the festival; and


     1     WHEREAS, The festival features free entertainment, including
     2  an apple pie and cheesecake contest and auction, a fine arts and
     3  photography exhibit, apple orchard tours, clowns, strolling
     4  quartets, local musical groups and special games and a petting
     5  zoo for children; and
     6     WHEREAS, Many Canton families are involved with the festival
     7  as volunteers, and proceeds from the festival have helped
     8  community organizations and projects; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize the
    10  Governor to proclaim the festival held annually during the first
    11  weekend in October in Canton, Pennsylvania, as the "Pennsylvania
    12  State Apple 'n Cheese Festival."
