        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 6, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Expressing sadness over the death of Mother Teresa.

     2     WHEREAS, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born 87 years ago in
     3  Albania and received a religious call as a girl to help the poor
     4  and needy of India; and
     5     WHEREAS, Sister Teresa began serving the poor of Calcutta in
     6  1947, teaching children whose parents were too poor to send them
     7  to school and ministering to the sick and dying street people of
     8  the city; and
     9     WHEREAS, She quickly became known within the Calcutta

     1  community as Mother Teresa, or simply "Mother"; and
     2     WHEREAS, In 1950 Mother Teresa formed the Congregation of the
     3  Missionaries of Charity and inspired it to grow to over 4,500
     4  members with 550 centers in 126 countries; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Missionaries of Charity have continued to serve
     6  the poorest of the poor, to whom she felt a particular calling,
     7  as well as lepers, sufferers of AIDS, battered women, drug
     8  addicts, radiation victims in Chernobyl, the hungry in Ethiopia
     9  and earthquake victims in Armenia; and
    10     WHEREAS, Her unselfish service has won her great honors: the
    11  1979 Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in
    12  1985, the (U.S.) Congressional Gold Medal in 1997 and the Jewel
    13  of India; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express sadness
    15  over the death of the remarkable woman known worldwide as Mother
    16  Teresa; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to:
    18         Sister Nirmala
    19         Motherhouse
    20         Missionaries of Charity
    21         Calcutta, Bengal
    22         INDIA
