        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 12, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring May 12 through 16, 1997, as "Lyme Disease Awareness
     2     Week" in this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection carried by
     4  deer ticks and is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Lyme disease poses a threat to the quality of life
     7  of many Pennsylvanians, with incidents increasing dramatically
     8  over the past few years to the point that 2,158 cases were
     9  reported to the Department of Health in 1996; and
    10     WHEREAS, The only way to acquire Lyme disease is to be bitten
    11  by a tick that carries Lyme disease; and
    12     WHEREAS, Lyme disease is preventable if caution is taken
    13  while engaged in outdoor activities from late spring through the
    14  fall or during a warmer winter season; and
    15     WHEREAS, The early detection and treatment of Lyme disease
    16  can greatly reduce the diverse and chronic symptoms that can
    17  affect every organ of the body; therefore be it


     1     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare May 12
     2  through 16, 1997, as "Lyme Disease Awareness Week" in this
     3  Commonwealth in an effort to benefit the health of the citizens
     4  of this Commonwealth by making them aware of Lyme disease.
