INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 9, 1997
A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring April 9, 1997, as "Athena Day" in this Commonwealth. 2 WHEREAS, The Athena Foundation brings into focus outstanding 3 professional and business women in the community and encourages 4 the opening of leadership opportunities for women within 5 workplaces in the community; and 6 WHEREAS, The Athena Foundation issues awards in coordination 7 with local chambers of commerce recognizing individuals for 8 business and professional accomplishments, for community 9 service, for mentoring and for providing role models to 10 encourage women to achieve their full leadership potential; and 11 WHEREAS, Twenty-three Pennsylvania communities currently 12 sponsor Athena award celebrations; and 13 WHEREAS, Recipients of the Athena Award for achievement, 14 service and assistance to others are honored in their 15 communities annually and recognized for excellence as honorees 16 among a select group rather than as competitors; and
1 WHEREAS, The Athena Award programs encourage communities, 2 states and nations to achieve a representative balance of 3 leadership by identifying and honoring those individuals and 4 companies who assist women in reaching their full leadership 5 potential; and 6 WHEREAS, Awards are inspired by the mythological character 7 Athena, the wise and valiant daughter of Zeus, a symbol of 8 resolute courage and wisdom, guided and enlightened by reason; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, By elevating exceptional role models and their 11 values, others will be inspired to achieve excellence, and the 12 words of Plato, "what is honored in a country will be cultivated 13 there," underscore this philosophy; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare April 9, 15 1997, as "Athena Day" in this Commonwealth.
