INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 3, 1997
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 22, 1997, as "Earth Day--Pennsylvania." 2 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has been endowed with great natural 3 beauty, an abundance of wood, water and great resources both in 4 soil and within the soil; and 5 WHEREAS, The founder of our Commonwealth, William Penn, 6 praised the land greatly after he saw it for the first time in 7 1682, noting "The country itself, its soil, air, water, seasons 8 and produce, both natural and artificial, is not to be 9 despised"; and 10 WHEREAS, While the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has 11 been taking action to protect and preserve our natural 12 resources, passing such measures as the Conversation Bill of 13 Rights, the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste 14 Reduction Act, the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, the Abandoned 15 Mine Subsidence Assistance Act, modernizations of The Clean
1 Streams Law and other measures aimed at halting air pollution, 2 the contamination of our water and the despoliation of our land; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, We are approaching the 27th Anniversary of the first 5 Earth Day, held in April of 1970, filled with resolve to protect 6 the natural resources of our Commonwealth for future 7 generations; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April 9 22, 1997, as "Earth Day--Pennsylvania"; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives dedicate itself 11 to the proposition that our natural environment must be 12 protected and preserved.
