INTRODUCED BY RYAN, MAITLAND, CORRIGAN, ROSS, CLYMER AND
           M. N. WRIGHT, APRIL 2, 1997

REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 2, 1997

                            A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

2 Museum Commission to apply the designation "Commonwealth
3 Treasure" to any location, structure, record and artifact
4 which the commission deems to be of outstanding historical
     5 significance.

6 WHEREAS, For present and future generations of Americans
7 there are certain treasures the preservation of which is

9 foundation, history and cultural heritage of our nation; and
10 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is blessed with an abundance of
11 locations, structures, records and artifacts of historical

13 WHEREAS, Our expanding population has increased highway,
14 housing and commercial development to the point where
15 Pennsylvania is in danger of losing many of these treasures from
16 its landscape, either by their total obliteration or by the
17 adulteration of their appearance to a degree where they no
18 longer accurately depict their significance; and
19 WHEREAS, If lost to this Commonwealth and the nation, these

1 priceless and irreplaceable treasures, which bring history alive
2 and recreate the reality of our foreparents' dreams and
3 struggles, will no longer be available as teaching aids and as
4 reminders of our heritage; and
5 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
6 wishes to apply the designation "Commonwealth Treasure" to any
7 location, structure, record and artifact which is deemed to be
8 of outstanding historical significance and has appealed to the
9 General Assembly for its support of this initiative; therefore
    10 be it
11 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly
12 endorse the initiative of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum
13 Commission to apply the designation "Commonwealth Treasure" to

    16 and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That the commission be notified by the Speaker of
18 the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of
19 the Senate of this endorsement upon its passage by the General
    20 Assembly.
