                                     AN ACT

     1  Providing for medical alert identifiers to be added to driver's
     2     licenses; and making an appropriation.

     3     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4  hereby enacts as follows:
     5  Section 1.  Short title.
     6     This act shall be known and may be cited as the Medical Alert
     7  Identifier Act.
     8  Section 2.  Definitions.
     9     The following words and phrases when used in this act shall
    10  have the meanings given to them in this section unless the
    11  context clearly indicates otherwise:
    12     "Department."  The Department of Transportation of the
    13  Commonwealth.
    14     "Medical alert identifier."  A written statement of a medical
    15  condition of the bearer of the statement which does not include
    16  specific medical information about the bearer.

     1  Section 3.  Driver's license or identification card.
     2     Upon written request of an applicant, the department shall
     3  issue a driver's license or an identification card bearing a
     4  medical alert identifier. The request must be on a form
     5  furnished by the department.
     6  Section 4.  Emergency medical services.
     7     Police and emergency medical services personnel shall take
     8  reasonable steps to insure that a victim's driver's license or
     9  personal identification card under section 3 accompanies the
    10  victim to the health care facility where the victim is treated.
    11  Section 5.  Appropriation.
    12     The sum of $  , or as much thereof as may be necessary, is
    13  hereby appropriated to the Department of Transportation for the
    14  fiscal year July 1, 1997, to June 30, 1998, to carry out the
    15  provisions of this act.
    16  Section 6.  Effective date.
    17     This act shall take effect in 180 days.
