        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 8, 1996

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Proclaiming November 3 through 9, 1996, as "Chemistry Week" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The science of chemistry gives us the power to
     4  understand and to use the elemental building blocks of all
     5  material things; and
     6     WHEREAS, The science of chemistry provides the fundamental
     7  understanding required to deal with many of society's needs,
     8  including several that determine our quality of life and our
     9  economic strength; and
    10     WHEREAS, Chemists and chemical engineers use their powerful
    11  science in helping feed the world's population, tapping new
    12  energy sources, clothing and housing humanity, providing
    13  renewable substitutes for dwindling or scarce materials,
    14  improving health and conquering disease, strengthening our


     1  national security, monitoring and protecting our environment;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, More than 5,000 members of the Philadelphia Section
     4  of the American Chemical Society, along with their nearly 200
     5  sister sections in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and
     6  Puerto Rico have set aside November 3 through November 9, 1996,
     7  for a national celebration directing our attention to the myriad
     8  contributions of their science; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives proclaim November
    10  3 through 9, 1996, as "Chemistry Week" in Pennsylvania with the
    11  hope that the chemists and chemical engineers of our State will
    12  rededicate themselves on this occasion to the service of all
    13  humanity.
