A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring Friday, April 26, 1996, as "Freedom Friday." 2 WHEREAS, Alcohol and illicit drugs are the source of the most 3 serious public health problem in America, addiction; and 4 WHEREAS, Addiction is the third leading killer in our nation 5 and will cost this nation over $315 billion per year; and 6 WHEREAS, There is a great need for more adequate funding for 7 research, prevention and treatment; and 8 WHEREAS, The answers to these problems lie in a better public 9 understanding of the nature of this disease and support of those 10 in recovery from this disease; and 11 WHEREAS, In order to create an opportunity for each citizen 12 of this Commonwealth to become part of the solution rather than 13 part of the problem, we are asking the general public to
1 abstain, other than for religious ceremonies, from all alcohol 2 and illicit drugs for one 24-hour period, which shall be known 3 as "Freedom Friday"; therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare Friday, 5 April 26, 1996, as "Freedom Friday"; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 7 Western Pennsylvania Chapter of Society of Americans for 8 Recovery, the Coalition for Addictive Diseases in Southwest 9 Pennsylvania, United Mental Health and the Allegheny County Drug 10 Initiative for their contributions to drug and alcohol treatment 11 and their involvement with "Freedom Friday."
