A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring April 10, 1996, as "Osteoporosis Prevention and 2 Treatment Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Osteoporosis is a bone disease and a public health 4 problem; and 5 WHEREAS, Osteoporosis poses a threat to the quality of life 6 of many Pennsylvanians; and 7 WHEREAS, The annual direct and indirect cost of osteoporosis 8 to our health care system is estimated to rise to between $60 9 billion and $80 billion by the year 2020; and 10 WHEREAS, One in two women and one in five men will suffer an 11 osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime; and 12 WHEREAS, Osteoporosis affects more than 25 million Americans 13 annually, 80% of them women; and
1 WHEREAS, Osteoporosis costs the nation over $10 billion 2 annually, more than congenital heart failure and asthma; 3 therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare April 10, 5 1996, as "Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Awareness Day" 6 in Pennsylvania in an effort to benefit the health of the 7 citizens of this Commonwealth.
