        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 20, 1996

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commending the Prom Promise program.

     2     WHEREAS, The Nationwide Insurance Prom Promise is a positive
     3  peer-pressure program for high school students that encourages
     4  them to sign the Prom Promise pledge, promising not to use
     5  alcohol and other drugs, especially on prom night; and
     6     WHEREAS, Students sign a pledge that states "I can have a
     7  positive influence on my life and the lives of my friends. My
     8  decisions are my own. And they are responsible ones. That's why
     9  I have decided to be safe and sober. So whether or not I go to
    10  prom, I promise not to use alcohol or other drugs. This is a
    11  promise I take seriously. It's one I intend to keep, for my sake


     1  and the sake of my friends. I'm signing it. I mean it. I'm
     2  keeping it"; and
     3     WHEREAS, The problem of alcohol and other drug use among
     4  young people is a serious problem; and
     5     WHEREAS, Reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents will
     6  save lives and reduce the associated costs of insurance and
     7  medical treatment; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Prom Promise program, sponsored by Nationwide
     9  Insurance, will help save lives by encouraging teenagers to
    10  pledge not to use alcohol or other drugs, especially on prom
    11  night; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend teenagers
    13  and Nationwide Insurance for their support of the Prom Promise
    14  program and strongly urge every teenager throughout this
    15  Commonwealth to make a promise to themselves, their friends and
    16  their families to have a safe prom and memorable life.
