1 Extending condolences to Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua and the
2 clergy and laity of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on the
3 passing of John Cardinal Krol, Archbishop Emeritus of
     4 Philadelphia.

5 WHEREAS, On Sunday, March 3, 1996, death brought to an end
6 the brilliant ecclesiastical career of John Joseph Krol,
7 Cardinal Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia; and
8 WHEREAS, Born in the city of Cleveland, Ohio, on October 26,
9 1910, Cardinal Krol was the son of John and Ann Krol. He was
10 ordained to the priesthood on February 20, 1937, and began his
11 meteoric rise through the ranks of the church in his native

1 diocese. His administrative and intellectual acumen were
2 recognized early in his priestly career when Pope Pius XII
3 raised him to the dignity of Papal Chamberlain in 1945 and
4 Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor in
5 1951. His service to the church in Cleveland culminated with his
6 ordination to the Episcopacy and his appointment as Auxiliary
7 Bishop and Vicar General; and
8 WHEREAS, On February 11, 1961, His Holiness Pope John XXIII
9 appointed John Joseph Krol as the Archbishop of Philadelphia and
10 Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Pennsylvania. On
11 June 26, 1967, His Holiness Pope Paul VI elevated Archbishop
12 Krol to the Sacred College of Cardinals, marking a milestone in

14 America in the last half century; and
15 WHEREAS, During his distinguished apostolic pastorate,
16 Cardinal Krol was the driving force in the canonization of his
17 illustrious predecessor, Saint John Neumann, C.S.S.R., the
18 Fourth Bishop of Philadelphia, and the beatification of a
19 distinguished daughter of Pennsylvania, Blessed Mother Katherine
20 Drexel, S.B.S., the foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed
21 Sacrament. During our nation's Bicentennial in 1976, Cardinal
22 Krol hosted the 41st International Eucharistic Congress in
23 Philadelphia. In 1979 he was host to His Holiness Pope John Paul
24 II on the occasion of the first pastoral visit of a reigning
25 pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church to the Commonwealth of
26 Pennsylvania. As Archbishop of Philadelphia, he enriched our
27 State with unparalleled honors and international recognition as
28 a goodwill ambassador; therefore be it
29 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, bowing to divine
30 judgment in taking from our midst John Cardinal Krol, note with
