        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 11, 1996

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating March 10, 1996, as the 315th Anniversary of
     2     Charter Day, the day that King Charles II gave William Penn
     3     the charter for Penn's Woods.

     4     WHEREAS, On March 4, 1681, King Charles gave William Penn the
     5  charter for Penn's Woods, which is now the Commonwealth of
     6  Pennsylvania; and
     7     WHEREAS, William Penn wanted his Pennsylvania to be a land
     8  where people of different languages and customs could live
     9  together, where men and women could worship as they choose and
    10  where the inhabitants could participate in their government; and
    11     WHEREAS, On Sunday, March 10, 1996, Pennsbury Manor, William
    12  Penn's country estate on the Delaware River and the only Penn
    13  residence open to the public here or abroad, will be the
    14  location of the celebration of the 315th Anniversary of Charter

     1  Day by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the
     2  Pennsbury Society; therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate March
     4  10, 1996, as the 315th Anniversary of Charter Day; and be it
     5  further
     6     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all of its
     7  citizens to reflect upon their heritage as Pennsylvanians.
