A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Joining in the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the 2 liberation of Korea on August 15, 1995, and celebrating that 3 day as the Day of Korean Jubilee for Peace and Reunification 4 and remembering the lives sacrificed in the 1950-1953 Korean 5 War. 6 WHEREAS, On August 15, 1945, Korean people overcame 36 years 7 of Japanese colonial rule and became liberated as a free people; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, In one of history's most bittersweet moments of 10 irony, as Japan surrendered to Allied powers and ended its 11 brutal rule over Korea, American and Soviet troops entered 12 Korea, ushering in the Cold War and dividing Korea ideologically 13 and geographically into two separate states for the past 50 14 years; and 15 WHEREAS, The Korean Conflict of 1950-1953 resulted in the 16 death of over 50,000 Americans and two million Koreans and the 17 separation of ten million Koreans from their families; and 18 WHEREAS, Korea is still divided and remains in a state of 19 tension, and the United States and North Korea are still in a
1 state of hostility, despite the end of the Cold War; and 2 WHEREAS, Concerned Korean-Americans and American citizens and 3 religious people join in their hope that divided Korea may 4 become one again, that separated families may rejoin each other 5 and that the United States and Korea may overcome the past era 6 of animosity and hostility; and 7 WHEREAS, Korean-Americans and people of North and South Korea 8 have declared 1995 to be the Year of Korean Jubilee for Peace 9 and Reunification; therefore be it 10 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 11 join in the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Korean 12 liberation on August 15, 1995; remember and honor the many 13 American and Korean lives sacrificed in the Korean War; and join 14 in the aspiration of the Korean-American community that peace, 15 reconciliation and reunification will come to their motherland, 16 Korea; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That August 15, 1995, be observed as the Day of 18 Korean Jubilee for Peace and Reunification.
