        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 9, 1995

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of May 21 through 27, 1995, as "Stroke Risk
     2     Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Stroke is the third leading cause of death in this
     4  Commonwealth for all ages combined; and
     5     WHEREAS, High blood pressure is a major controllable risk
     6  factor for brain attack (stroke), as well as heart attack; and
     7     WHEREAS, High blood cholesterol also contributes to an
     8  increased risk for brain attacks, as well as heart attacks; and
     9     WHEREAS, More than 3 million stroke survivors nationwide are
    10  alive today; and
    11     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians may prevent disabling or fatal
    12  strokes by having their blood pressure and cholesterol levels


     1  measured with quick, painless tests, by controlling their blood
     2  pressure and cholesterol levels through proper diet and, when
     3  appropriate, by controlling their blood pressure and cholesterol
     4  levels through diet in combination with medications; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians are urged to know their blood
     6  pressure and cholesterol numbers and to lower their blood
     7  pressure and cholesterol levels, if necessary; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
     9  week of May 21 through 27, 1995, as "Stroke Risk Awareness Week"
    10  in Pennsylvania and emphasize to all Pennsylvanians that "Stroke
    11  is a Brain Attack. Know the Warning Signs."
