INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 16, 1995
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing March 19 through 25, 1995, as "Butane and Inhalants 2 Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians should be made aware that a 4 multitude of common household products constitute a serious 5 threat to our children when the toxic fumes from these products 6 are intentionally inhaled; and 7 WHEREAS, Nationally 18% of high school seniors, 6% of eighth 8 graders and 3.5% of sixth graders have intentionally inhaled or 9 "huffed" the fumes of these products for the purpose of "getting 10 high"; and 11 WHEREAS, The risks of inhalant abuse include permanent and 12 severe brain damage, heart failure, loss of consciousness and 13 sudden death, as well as irreversible damage to the liver, 14 kidneys and bone marrow; and 15 WHEREAS, Children have died in this Commonwealth due to the
1 inhalation of butane and inhalants; and 2 WHEREAS, Inhalant abuse can set the stage for the abuse of 3 other illegal drugs; and 4 WHEREAS, The public is not generally aware of the health 5 threat posed by inhalant abuse; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge retailers to 7 be aware of the dangers of products like butane that can be 8 abused by inhalation and to limit visibility and availability of 9 such products to young people wherever practicable by placing 10 them behind counters; and be it further 11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives hereby recognize 12 March 19 through 25, 1995, as "Butane and Inhalants Awareness 13 Week"; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be provided to 15 "Pennsylvanians Aware," the Statewide coalition working for 16 drug-free youths in this Commonwealth, as an expression of 17 support from the House of Representatives.
