           JANUARY 26, 1995

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz fifty years ago today,
     2     January 26.

     3     WHEREAS, Fifty years ago today, January 26, 1945, Soviet
     4  soldiers who were in the process of liberating Poland from Nazi
     5  oppression stumbled upon a concentration camp in Birkenau,
     6  Poland, called "Auschwitz"; and
     7     WHEREAS, Aware of approaching Soviet soldiers, Nazi soldiers
     8  and prison guards hastily gathered together the healthiest
     9  inmates of Auschwitz and began a march back to Germany with
    10  those 60,000 inmates; and
    11     WHEREAS, When the Soviet soldiers entered Auschwitz, they
    12  encountered 7,000 emaciated and sickly survivors, and a deathly
    13  odor and grisly evidence of the execution and cremation of 1.5
    14  million Poles and European Jews; and
    15     WHEREAS, It is fitting indeed to reflect today on this


     1  immense, senseless sacrifice of humanity and to vow "Never
     2  Again"; therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pause in its
     4  deliberations today to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz,
     5  which occurred on this very day fifty years ago.
