                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Observing the week of April 18 through 24, 1993, as "Organ Donor
     2     Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Organ donation has proven to be a viable and
     4  effective means of saving people's lives; and
     5     WHEREAS, It is estimated that over 30,000 people are waiting
     6  for organ transplants in the United States; and
     7     WHEREAS, Approximately seven people die per day in the United
     8  States awaiting a transplant; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth by law enables citizens to donate
    10  their own organs through express organ donation and also allows
    11  for relatives to consent to the donation of organs of a deceased
    12  member of the family; and
    13     WHEREAS, Awareness and education about these laws and similar
    14  laws in the United States will help to educate citizens about
    15  the lifesaving choice they can make by becoming organ donors;
    16  and
    17     WHEREAS, Additional donations of organs will save more lives;


     1  therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the week of April 18
     3  through 24, 1993, as "Organ Donor Awareness Week" in
     4  Pennsylvania and encourage others to observe this week with the
     5  appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
