           MIHALICH, TRICH, WOZNIAK, STEELMAN, COLAIZZO AND TANGRETTI,
           SEPTEMBER 27, 1994

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Requiring the Pennsylvania Department of Health to expand a
     2     previous study on cancer rates in the Alle-Kiski Valley.

     3     WHEREAS, Incidences of cancer in Armstrong County and
     4  Westmoreland County are well above the State cancer rate; and
     5     WHEREAS, A number of manufacturers operated a plant in
     6  Apollo, Armstrong County, which processed uranium for about 30
     7  years; and
     8     WHEREAS, A company still operates a plant in Parks Township,
     9  Armstrong County, which cleans radiation-contaminated equipment
    10  and maintains a 40-acre uranium waste site; and
    11     WHEREAS, Citizens of Apollo and the surrounding communities
    12  have complained of high incidences of cancer in their families;
    13  and
    14     WHEREAS, The Department of Health conducted an inconclusive
    15  study of cancer rates for the years 1984 to 1985 for the Alle-
    16  Kiski Valley; and
    17     WHEREAS, Upon the request of local citizens, government


     1  officials and citizen groups like Physicians for Social
     2  Responsibility, the Department of Health has not made a decision
     3  on expanding the scope of the study to a ten-year period;
     4  therefore be it
     5     RESOLVED, That the Department of Health shall, within 90
     6  days, expand the study on cancer rates in the Alle-Kiski Valley
     7  to a ten-year period beginning with the year 1984; and be it
     8  further
     9     RESOLVED, That upon completion of the study, the Department
    10  of Health shall send a copy to every member of the House of
    11  Representatives, to the Physicians for Social Responsibility and
    12  to the appropriate local government officials in the study area.
