HOUSE RESOLUTION

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Directing the Speaker of the House of Representatives to appoint
     2     a select committee to investigate pediatric trauma.

     3     WHEREAS, Ten percent of all trauma cases treated in
     4  Pennsylvania are children under the age of 15; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pediatric medicine requires not only specialized
     6  knowledge in pediatrics but also different-sized equipment,
     7  including intravenous needles, blood pressure cuffs and
     8  medication doses; and
     9     WHEREAS, While Pennsylvania does have pediatric hospitals and
    10  trauma units, there are no provisions or requirements for
    11  treatment of children who do not have immediate access to these
    12  pediatric facilities; and
    13     WHEREAS, Although Pennsylvania has laws and regulations on
    14  emergency care, no information is available on the needs or
    15  deficiencies in the system with respect to children; therefore
    16  be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the Speaker of the House of Representatives


     1  appoint a select committee, five members to be from the majority
     2  party and four members to be from the minority party, to
     3  investigate pediatric trauma in Pennsylvania, to determine if
     4  there is a deficiency in care of children, and to recommend
     5  steps to be taken to resolve the problems; and be it further
     6     RESOLVED, That the committee may hold hearings, take
     7  testimony and conduct investigations throughout this
     8  Commonwealth as may be necessary to achieve its objective. Each
     9  member of the committee shall have the power to administer oaths
    10  and affirmations to witnesses appearing before the committee;
    11  and be it further
    12     RESOLVED, That the committee make a final report of its
    13  findings and recommendations within 60 days of the completion of
    14  its investigation.
