A RESOLUTION 1 Petitioning the Postmaster General of the United States Postal 2 Service to issue a stamp recognizing the contributions of 3 Mother Jones; and designating May 1,1993, as "Mother Jones 4 Day." 5 WHEREAS, Mother Jones was born Mary Harris on May 1, 1830, in 6 Cork County, Ireland; and 7 WHEREAS, Mother Jones campaigned for social reform, civil 8 rights and justice for the working class. She made no 9 distinction between race, color or religion; and 10 WHEREAS, Mother Jones was a lifelong champion of children's 11 rights, fighting to put an end to child labor and the abuse of 12 children in the workplace. She traveled all over the country 13 organizing mine workers, textile workers and railroad workers; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, Mother Jones's contributions have never been 16 completely documented or acknowledged; therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
1 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania respectfully request the Postmaster 2 General of the United States Postal Service to issue a stamp in 3 the likeness of Mary Harris, "Mother Jones," and to designate 4 May 1, 1993, as "Mother Jones Day"; and be it further 5 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 6 the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service and 7 to the Mother Jones Stamp Campaign Headquarters, 3354 8 Edwardsville Road, Edwardsville, Illinois 62025.
