AN ACT
1 Amending the act of June 2, 1915 (P.L.736, No.338), entitled, as
2 reenacted and amended, "An act defining the liability of an
3 employer to pay damages for injuries received by an employe
4 in the course of employment; establishing an elective
5 schedule of compensation; providing procedure for the
6 determination of liability and compensation thereunder; and
7 prescribing penalties," providing that certain sports
8 officials be considered employees of the school district
9 which utilizes their services for compensation purposes.
10 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
11 hereby enacts as follows:
12 Section 1. Section 601(a) of the act of June 2, 1915
13 (P.L.736, No.338), known as The Pennsylvania Workmen's
14 Compensation Act, reenacted and amended June 21, 1939 (P.L.520,
15 No.281), is amended by adding a clause and the section is
16 amended by adding a subsection to read:
17 Section 601. (a) In addition to those persons included
18 within the definition of the word "employe" as defined in
19 section 104, "employe" shall also include:

21 (9) All duly qualified and registered interscholastic sports
1 officials of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic 2 Association are hereby declared to be employes for the purposes 3 of this act of the school district by whom they are employed or 4 utilized in the case of injuries received while actually engaged 5 as sports officials during interscholastic sports events 6 conducted by the school district or occurring in or upon a 7 facility owned, leased or controlled by the school district or 8 while so engaged during a preseason practice of an athletic team 9 of the school district. If the sports official, when injured, is 10 engaged in officiating a contest or event scheduled by the 11 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association or any one of 12 its component districts, the sports official is declared to be 13 an employe of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic 14 Association or its component district, as the case may be, 15 during such contest or event during which the injury occurs. 16 * * * 17 (e) The term "school district" when used in this article 18 shall mean all public school districts and private or religious 19 educational institutions containing one or more of grades one 20 through twelve. 21 Section 2.
