A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing November 22, 1992, as "Lebanese Independence Day." 2 WHEREAS, The country of Lebanon is situated on the eastern 3 Mediterranean, boardered by Syria on the north and east and by 4 Israel on the south; and 5 WHEREAS, The Lebanese people trace their history to the 12th 6 century B.C., when their ancestors, known as the Phoenicians, 7 established an empire and a civilization based on international 8 trade; and 9 WHEREAS, Lebanon became a part of the Ottoman Empire in 1516 10 A.D. and its current boundaries were established by France in 11 1920; and 12 WHEREAS, Lebanon was proclaimed an independent republic in 13 1941 and achieved complete independence and sovereignty on 14 November 22, 1943; and 15 WHEREAS, Lebanon is a parliamentary republic and is a focal 16 point for international trade due to its central location and 17 well developed infrastructure; and
1 WHEREAS, The literacy rate in Lebanon is over 97%, the 2 highest in the Middle East; therefore be it 3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and 4 congratulate the Republic of Lebanon on the observance of 5 "Lebanese Independence Day" on November 22, 1992.
