        Vote on resolution, unanimously adopted, June 23, 1992

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Expressing the deep sadness of the House of Representatives upon
     2     the death of Justice James T. McDermott.

     3     WHEREAS, On June 21, 1992, James T. McDermott, one of
     4  Pennsylvania's most distinguished jurists, died at the age of
     5  65; and
     6     WHEREAS, Justice McDermott was born September 22, 1926, and
     7  was a life long resident of the City of Philadelphia. He was
     8  married to Mary Theresa Bradley Reese and was the father of six
     9  children; and
    10     WHEREAS, He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St.
    11  Joseph's University in 1947 and a law degree from Temple
    12  University in 1950; and
    13     WHEREAS, He was associated with the law firm of McDermott,
    14  Quinn and Higgins. He was a Republican candidate for Congress in
    15  1958, for city council in 1962 and the Republican candidate for

     1  mayor in 1963; and
     2     WHEREAS, His judicial career commenced in 1965 when he was
     3  appointed to the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. In 1981 he
     4  was elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and won his
     5  retention election in 1991; and
     6     WHEREAS, He served as chairman of the Philadelphia City
     7  Charter Revision Committee. He was an instructor at St. Joseph's
     8  University in Legal Evidence, Labor Law, Commercial Law and
     9  Criminal Law; and
    10     WHEREAS, He was active in many professional and civic
    11  associations and activities. He received a number of awards
    12  including the St. Joseph's University Hogan Award, an award from
    13  the Philadelphia Boosters, and two "Man of the Year" awards from
    14  the Pennsylvania State Police and the Retired Police Chiefs
    15  Association; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its deep
    17  sadness at the death of Justice James T. McDermott; and be it
    18  further
    19     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    20  his surviving family.
