A RESOLUTION 1 Designating January 15 through February 15, 1992, as "Alcohol 2 Information Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Alcohol abuse is the single greatest substance- 4 specific problem in this Commonwealth, directly affecting 5 between 11% and 16% of the population; and 6 WHEREAS, It is estimated by the Congressional Office of 7 Technology that alcohol abuse and misuse may cost the Nation as 8 much as $120 billion annually in terms of lost production, 9 medical costs, motor vehicle accidents, fire losses and violent 10 crimes; and 11 WHEREAS, Alcohol is related to one-half of all traffic 12 deaths, one-third each of all traffic injuries, suicides and 13 crimes and more than two-thirds of all drownings; and 14 WHEREAS, Alcohol use is associated with a large percentage of 15 teenage pregnancies and is also associated with the alarming 16 rate of teenage suicide; and
1 WHEREAS, Alcohol abuse has been linked to a variety of social 2 problems, such as violence, homelessness, crime and increased 3 health costs; and 4 WHEREAS, Efforts at alerting and educating the public about 5 the dangers of alcohol abuse can have a significant positive 6 effect in lessening this alarming problem; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend United 8 Mental Health and its Special Advisory Council on Alcohol and 9 Other Drugs for its efforts to combat alcohol abuse and 10 designate January 15 through February 15, 1992, as "Alcohol 11 Information Month" in Pennsylvania.
