                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October as "AIDS AWARENESS MONTH."

     2     WHEREAS, The disease known as AIDS (Acquired Immune
     3  Deficiency Syndrome), a virus which attacks and destroys the
     4  body's immune system, has been a devastating plague upon our
     5  nation, permeating our society and killing thousands of people
     6  without regard to age, sex, social or economic background; and
     7     WHEREAS, Along with the rest of the country, Pennsylvania has
     8  felt the impact of the AIDS epidemic, with the number of
     9  documented cases jumping from 6 in 1981 to 814 in 1988, along
    10  with the number of deaths increasing from 5 in 1981 to 361 in
    11  1988; and
    12     WHEREAS, Although there is presently no known cure for AIDS,
    13  medical research has made great advances, which include
    14  determining how the virus is transmitted, as well as developing
    15  AZT, a drug which not only prolongs the lives of AIDS patients,

     1  but has been shown to seriously inhibit the disease in those who
     2  carry the virus; and
     3     WHEREAS, The education of our citizens is vital in giving
     4  them an understanding of the disease, its causes, how it can be
     5  transmitted and how it can be prevented; and
     6     WHEREAS, There have been numerous organizations formed across
     7  this Commonwealth whose members work tirelessly in providing
     8  support services to AIDS victims and their families, as well as
     9  informing the people in their communities about AIDS; therefore
    10  be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    12  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate the month of October as
    13  "AIDS AWARENESS MONTH" and urge our fellow citizens to become
    14  better informed about this dreaded disease, its prevention, and
    15  the impact it is having on our society.
