        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, MAY 1, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Governor to proclaim the week of May 15 through 21,
     2     1989, as "Safe Kids Week."

     3     WHEREAS, During the week of May 15 through 21, 1989, the
     4  National Coalition to Prevent Childhood Injury has scheduled a
     5  local and national campaign to increase public awareness of the
     6  high incidence of accidental injury among children; and
     7     WHEREAS, Each year, nearly 8,000 children up to 15 years of
     8  age die from injuries sustained in accidents, thereby making
     9  unintentional injuries and trauma the leading killer of children
    10  in the United States; and
    11     WHEREAS, Each year, approximately one in four children under
    12  15 years of age receives an injury serious enough to require
    13  medical attention; and


     1     WHEREAS, The incidence of childhood accidental injury doubles
     2  during the trauma season, the time when children are released
     3  from school for the summer vacation and spend a great deal of
     4  their recreational hours outdoors; and
     5     WHEREAS, The National Coalition believes that it is
     6  critically important to focus attention on the problem of
     7  accidental injury, the need for preventive measures and the need
     8  to educate the public on prevention and emergency response;
     9  therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor
    11  to proclaim May 15 through 21, 1989, as "Safe Kids Week" in this
    12  Commonwealth, and to call upon all the residents of Pennsylvania
    13  to support the aims, goals and programs of the National
    14  Coalition to Prevent Childhood Injury, for the benefit of our
    15  most precious resource, our children.
