                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 13, 1967 (P.L.31, No.21), entitled "An
     2     act to consolidate, editorially revise, and codify the public
     3     welfare laws of the Commonwealth," providing for payment of
     4     the cost of burial of indigent persons in State institutions.

     5     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     6  hereby enacts as follows:
     7     Section 1.  The act of June 13, 1967 (P.L.31, No.21), known
     8  as the Public Welfare Code, is amended by adding a section to
     9  read:
    10     Section 318.  Timely Burial of Deceased Indigent Patients of
    11  State Institutions.--When a patient dies at a State institution
    12  and no relative, friend or charitable organization claims the
    13  body for burial at their expense and the patient's estate
    14  contains insufficient funds for burial, the superintendent of
    15  the institution shall immediately provide for the patient's
    16  burial. Funds of the deceased shall be released to the funeral
    17  director. The institution may supplement the funds of the

     1  deceased for the purposes of paying for the burial.
     2     Section 2.  The act of June 13, 1883 (P.L.119, No.106),
     3  entitled "An act for the promotion of medical science by the
     4  distribution and use of unclaimed human bodies for scientific
     5  purposes through a board created for that purpose and to prevent
     6  unauthorized uses and traffic in human bodies," is repealed
     7  insofar as it is inconsistent with this act.
     8     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
