                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of April 27, 1927 (P.L.465, No.299), entitled,
     2     as amended, "An act to provide for the safety of persons
     3     employed, housed, or assembled in certain buildings and
     4     structures by requiring certain construction and ways of
     5     egress, equipment, and maintenance; providing for the
     6     licensing of projectionists, except in cities of the first
     7     class and second class; requiring the submission of plans for
     8     examination and approval; providing for the promulgation of
     9     rules and regulations for the enforcement of this act;
    10     providing for the enforcement of this act by the Department
    11     of Labor and Industry, the Department of Health, boards of
    12     school directors and, in certain cases, by the chiefs of fire
    13     departments in cities of the third class; providing penalties
    14     for violations of the provisions of this act; and repealing
    15     certain acts," requiring the installation of smoke detectors
    16     in all State, county and municipal government buildings.

    17     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    18  hereby enacts as follows:
    19     Section 1.  The title of the act of April 27, 1927 (P.L.465,
    20  No.299), referred to as the Fire and Panic Act, amended December
    21  21, 1988 (P.L.1315, No.168), is amended to read:
    22                               AN ACT
    23  To provide for the safety of persons employed, housed, or


     1     assembled in certain buildings and structures by requiring
     2     certain construction and ways of egress, equipment, and
     3     maintenance; requiring the installation of smoke detectors in
     4     all State, county and municipal government buildings;
     5     providing for the licensing of projectionists, except in
     6     cities of the first class and second class; requiring the
     7     submission of plans for examination and approval; providing
     8     for the promulgation of rules and regulations for the
     9     enforcement of this act; providing for the enforcement of
    10     this act by the Department of Labor and Industry, the
    11     Department of Health, boards of school directors and, in
    12     certain cases, by the chiefs of fire departments in cities of
    13     the third class; providing penalties for violations of the
    14     provisions of this act; and repealing certain acts.
    15     Section 2.  Section 3 of the act, amended April 11, 1939
    16  (P.L.18, No.17), is amended to read:
    17     Section 3.  Special Requirements.--(a)  There shall be
    18  installed such emergency lighting systems, sprinkler systems,
    19  and fire alarm systems, in such of the buildings enumerated in
    20  this act as the Department of Labor and Industry may specify and
    21  which in its judgment are necessary to give proper protection
    22  from fire and panic to those employed, assembled, lodged or
    23  housed therein. No such systems shall be installed unless they
    24  are of a type approved by the Department of Labor and Industry.
    25     (b)  In addition to any other emergency systems required by
    26  this act, all State, county and municipal government buildings
    27  shall be equipped with smoke detectors of a type approved by the
    28  Department of Labor and Industry. The approved smoke detectors
    29  shall be installed in such places and in such manner as the
    30  Department of Labor and Industry shall require by regulation.
